Overview

Second life is a virtual world developed by Linden Labs that allows users to explore the ‘grid’ and interact with other users via avatars. One of the more exciting and interesting features of Second Life is the capability of users to create and add on to the grid using a three-dimensional modeling tool that is built into the software. It does not cost anything to either create a Second Life account or to create additions to the grid; however, a Premium membership ($9.95 monthly) automatically puts money in the users avatar weekly and adds access to greater technical support. The premium membership also gives the user the ability to own land. Users can take literally any form they choose for their avatar therefore giving them unlimited means for expression in the way they present themselves in the virtual world. A social place, Second Life allows you to talk to other via IM style chatting both individually and in groups and you may also make friends and carry on relationships in Second Life. Sex is also possible in Second Life and there are many adult specific locations in Second Life with an age verification requirement. Additionally no person under the age of 16 is allowed to join Second Life and if someone is suspected of being underage their account is suspended until their age can be verified. During its existence Second Life has been involved with several controversies including those related to users having sex in Second Life using child-age avatars
and policies pertaining to gambling in Second Life.
